Opensearch dashboard drilldown functionality

Opensearch dashboard drilldown functionality so it that it takes takes values of filters to next dashboard.

We have option of a URL drilldown, but a dashboard drilldown will be useful and flexible.

Thanks for opening this issue!

Is it correct to assume you'd be looking for dashboard drilldowns that supports contextual dashboard-to-dashboard workflows with the same user context i.e., a user could persist filters as well as controls, subsets, etc. into a later dashboard? If so, can you share a bit more about what you'd like to see in the experience?

Also, @kgcreative how extendable is the current URL drilldowns?

Opensearch dashboard drilldown functionality

@ahopp Yes , Looking for that !

Full Requirement: Option to create dashboard drilldown from Gear icon in visualization tab present in dashboard. Dashboard drilldown has to carry filter values to next dashboard and filter accordingly.Applicable to all tables and standard charts. Also a customize time range option would be helpful.

@btzeng - can you dig into this from the UX side to find an intuitive pattern for this? @Sandy381 - we may have some additional follow-ups as we dig into this more

@ahopp @kgcreative Are we going to add drill down functionality to individual charts in the same dashboard? i.e. in a time series chart, other than date range and volume, user includes three other dimensions from the same data source. When drilling down between dimensions, visualization (metric) reflects accordingly. In each drilldown saved state, the applied filters can be carried over to other dashboards (or visualizations)?

@btzeng my understanding is that we'd want to enable drilldowns that supports dashboard-to-dashboard workflows that persist user context i.e., a user could apply filters as well as controls, subsets, etc. into a later dashboard. An example workflow might be something like;

  1. A devops engineer/analyst is looking at a high-level, client side-centric dashboard.
  2. While investigating, the engineer/analyst notices a spike in latency metrics and filters to some geography (or device type or something similar) and then filters to some specific dates.
  3. The engineer/analyst uses the drilldown feature to view a latency-specific dashboard with the filters pre-applied thus reserving the context of the previous investigation/filters.

@Sandy381 does that sound about right?

The other option we should consider is if we want this feature to work with other types of contextual passthrough e.g., URL, discover, etc. I really like the idea of a user being able to passthrough to open tickets, internal tools, GitHub, etc. via drilldown clicks in a visualization or dashboard.

@ahopp Yes, exactly what I thought for drilldown feature!

Hello all, dropping in here to ask if there's any progress or a roadmap for this, as we'd love to see this functionality.

I'd like to see the relevant data entries. For example, the log entries related to the spikes. I can't seem to find that.

it would be also great not only to support drill down, but also to support an ability to expand some grouped entries in data table visualisation to see event in that group, that would make UI/UX much better and would allow much easier navigation than in current dashboards, where you need to create a bunch of visualisation+saved search for dashboard that would allow to filter data in saved search

Pls enable the capabilities listed here at https://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/9.2.0/Viz/DrilldownIntro
