logs from the XMLRPC webserver, errors from the JVM and other stuff go to stderr... so much so that we automatically capture stderr in the init.d script. But, this opens us to bugs (like what just happened today) where if the disk fills up, all of FV comes to a crashing halt blocked on writing to stderr (I think). Anyway, this should be addressed; even though it's likely multiple issues.
