[MainUI] In market place show title of creator

Open mueller-ma opened this issue 1 year ago • 3 comments

The problem

Currently all bindings from the market place show up as "Unverified author" when installing it. IMO a user that is "Maintainer" in the forum can/might be more trusted than a random new user.

Your suggestion

Show the title of the user on the community forum in Main UI. Example: Mine is "Maintainer": https://community.openhab.org/u/mueller-ma/summary

I like that idea but I wonder if it opens an area for concern. My title is "Foundation Member". All that means is that I've paid my dues and shouldn't be any indication of trust. I would worry that users would trust "Foundation Members" more and a malicious publisher might take advantage of that fact.

I don't think we've ever encountered that sort of situation so far so the likelihood is low but it's something to consider.

I would also keep it simple - we have the categories "official" (trusted) and "3rd party" (untrusted) and that should be enough as a differentiation.

I had thought about that too and while in previous discussions we wanted to make the author less prominent (like, not display their name in lists), I think we could add it to the "last chance" confirmation screen (the drawer after you click "install") - as in, instead of simply "Unverified Author" you would get "Unverified Author: John Doe" or "Unverified Author (John Doe)".

Adding the forum's title as suggested would require some changes in the core.

As for the "verified" status this has to be defined but as of now, everything that's not part of the distribution is not verified.
