Ubuntu package errors

Open farotherside opened this issue 4 years ago • 1 comments

hey,

just rebuilt my sailboat's internal computer as Ubuntu 20. I installed Xygrib 1.2.6 from the main Ubuntu repository:

root@xwing:~# apt-get install xygrib
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  xygrib
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B/1,075 kB of archives.
After this operation, 5,748 kB of additional disk space will be used.
Selecting previously unselected package xygrib.
(Reading database ... 175050 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to unpack .../xygrib_1.2.6-1build2_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking xygrib (1.2.6-1build2) ...
Setting up xygrib (1.2.6-1build2) ...
Processing triggers for mime-support (3.64ubuntu1) ...
Processing triggers for gnome-menus (3.36.0-1ubuntu1) ...
Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils (0.24-1ubuntu3) ...
root@xwing:~#

launching XyGrib gives me a binary that reports it's version as 1.2.5, and pops up a window saying a newer version (1.2.6) is available for download. It says to use the tool in the 'Help' menu, but my 'Help' menu only contains four entries: Help, About XyGrib, Check for Updates and About QT.

this is a fresh install of the operating system, including formatting the drives and starting from complete scratch.

Hi, Linux packages on distro repositories are built and maintained by third parties. You should contact the person responsible for the package you are using. This can be found in the repository web pages. From you description of the Help menu is apparent that you have a version of XyGrib that was modified by the third party that created the package. The XyGrib project here and on the openGribs.org web site, offer an appImage installation package which can be installed on all Linux distros. This is in the releases here or from the downloads on the openGribs.org web site. I hope this helps you.
