Source definition : OGC GroundWaterML2 also candidate for IFC
A surface on a fluid body within a local or regional area, e.g. piezometric, potentiometric, water table, salt wedge, etc.
Good that we have this - this subject area can be tricky to deal with.
Water tables and piezometric surfaces do have an unnerving tendency to move up and down, which is perhaps more of a real life problem that a problem for our model. Also, piezometric surfaces in artesian conditions are interesting!
It would be interesting to see example of how these are dealt with in real life models (the hydrogeologists should know best - do we have any on here?)
Probably need to read OGC GroundWaterML2. Do we know who is using this?
I think this term should be reserved for (what I refer to as) observational models.
We may need to new item for such surface intended for design/analysis , i.e. analogous to the (correct) separation between geological unit and geotechnical unit.

Well there is exactly a joint OGC - WMO workshop organised today (March 10th) on that topic. See here
At least, Geological Surveys from Canada, US and in Europe use it.
