Unify writing to British English

The documentation currently contains a mix of American and British English. We want to:

  1. Document in the “Contribute to documentation” page that British English should be used.
  2. Reword everything to British English.

@verbman are there still some parts left to handle following #298 #301 #302 #303 #306? If so, could you please list them here? ~If not, could you please close this issue? 🙂~ — should not be closed since we should document that in the CONTRIBUTING.
