Make 500 Error Page Prettier

Open simonv3 opened this issue 7 years ago • 6 comments

Right now our 500 page is just a white page with a very simple text.

This should be brought in line with the style of OpenFarm and not really break the flow of the app.

@justinmarkfarrugia could you explain your reasoning for thinking it clashes with Obi design wise? Educational for everyone involved :)

Sure :) Let's look at the two next to each other versus Now at first glance you could definitely say that they were sketched/designed at two different points in time, but let's assume they weren't or that we don't have that eye to differentiate the two. In every product, designers always make sure there is a visual voice or a design language to follow to make sure that there is some level of consistency across the entire experience of actually using the product.

With Obi and Cropster, there's a complete contrast with how they look/could look and feel/could feel in the overall product. Speaking from a visual perspective, Obi has multiple shadows, large outer stroke and looks dynamic whereas Cropster looks plastered into a picture frame. The only dynamism that Cropster has is possibly the light shadows and the subtle gradients but that's it. Sure, in illustration you're given that freedom to sometimes go a bit crazy and explore, but this felt like a complete departure from the original mascot and the preset visual tone.

Now, consistency is not just incorporated in there for the sake of having replication or predictability it's the first thought that comes to designer's mind because they don't want to have a mixed visual bag. It's ideal for people to keep coming across the same or similar assets/elements because then they'd feel at home.

Illustrations that follow a particular design language and are incorporated routinely across the entirety of the product gives people not only a strong sense of place, but also some clarity. By doing just that, people wouldn't be second-guessing whether assets came from the same source (OpenFarm) or not.

Anyone whose interested in reading further should definitely check this out
