Is there a way to set the default environment as text mode, not math mode?

Hey, my problem is that when we put a lot of text with some formulas into the library, I have to use \text{} again and again. Is there a way to set the parsing environment to plain text when parsing, instead of math mode, and use math mode only for $a_1$?
