tell people what happens to their personal information
Clearly outline for people what happens to their information when they make a submission (via planningalerts.org.au and in general if different) At the moment we only talk about what we do with the information but not what happens to it after it goes to the planning authority.

@mlandauer How about something like
PlanningAlerts provides your email address and street address to the planning authority only so that the planning authority can identify you, and to contact you in response to your comment on DA [number].
PlanningAlerts passes on the information only for those purposes in good faith to each planning authority. [planning authority] may have policies and procedures they follow in accordance with how they interpret their obligations with regard to planning and privacy. This may lead them to share and retain information in other ways.
If you have reason to believe the planning authority has shared your information for other purposes without your permission then please check with them.

update from legal advice.
While we direct all authorities to whom we provide your personal information on your behalf that they cannot disclose your information to third parties without your consent, each authority will be bound by its own privacy policy which is available on their website.
I suggest splitting into two shorter sentences:
We direct all authorities to whom we provide your personal information on your behalf that they cannot disclose your information to third parties without your consent. However each authority will be bound by its own privacy policy which is available on their website.
Following exchange with Justin at Marque lawyers, we've arrived at
We direct all authorities to whom we provide your personal information on your behalf that they cannot disclose your information to third parties without your consent. However, each authority will be bound by its own privacy policy which is available on their website.
If you have reason to believe the planning authority has shared your information for other purposes without your permission then you can make a complaint to the authority. Failing that, you can also take it up with the information commissioner in your state or territory.
That's a lot more new information for people. Next need to figure out where this goes!

I still think that 'We direct all authorities to whom we provide your personal information on your behalf that they cannot disclose your information to third parties without your consent. However, each authority will be bound by its own privacy policy which is available on their website.'
is good but it misses that the council may see their responsibilities differently. Without going into too much detail or being verbose, I think the most straightforward thing we could say might be along the lines of they should let you know what they plan to do with your comment and your personal information.
so the next question: Is there a clear place to add "While we direct all authorities to whom we provide your personal information on your behalf that they cannot disclose your information to third parties without your consent, each authority will be bound by its own privacy policy which is available on their website." ?
