Categorization / Filter By Topic Idea

Open weberkent opened this issue 8 years ago • 6 comments

Hey Max,

I'm trying to make a push into VR, specifically around UX and I am really excited to stumble upon your list of resources.

Obviously, the sheer amount of content here is significant and the fact that you organized the list by format is quite helpful, but I would imagine that the value of this list could be enhanced further if the user could organize by topic. At a glance I would see the following as filter options:

  • User Interface
  • General design principles,
  • Spacial considerations,
  • Brand specific (google/facebook, etc.)
  • Accessibility,
  • etc.

As there is just a massive amount of content here, I wanted to see if you would have any interest in collaborating on this sort of update. I would offer to do the leg work of categorizing this content, and you can build out the filtering mechanism (if we can align to a reasonable timeline for me to go through this profound list of yours :)

I'm happy to hop on a call / google hangout to discuss this idea further and if this all seems like too much lifting, then no worries. Just thought I would reach out, as I do want to work through a lot of this content over the next 3-4 months.

My email: weberkent [at] gmail

Thanks Max!

Hi, thanks for the suggestion!

To achieve what you're suggesting (which is a great suggestion!) we would need to assign more meta data per resource, for example an array of tags:

resources:
  - title: "UI/UX design for WebVR"
    url: "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOaOYTOpwyM"
    author: "Josh Carpenter"
tags: ["WebVR", "Navigation", "User Interface", "Spacial considerations", "Mozilla"]

This can be done now, by anybody, and submitted as a Pull Request, without effecting the current website. Then I could add the filtering device once the content is all tagged.

You can build and test the site locally by cloning the repo, installing the dependencies (I'm using Gulp and NPM) and then running the build task with gulp (gulp build). This will use the files in src/ to generate static html in a dist/ directory.

It's worth noting that (due to my short sightedness!) the order of the resources can't change at the moment as the index of each resource is used to determine if it has been viewed by a user. New items are appended to the end of the resources list now, rather than being actually grouped in the data.yml.

So yes this is a great suggestion, and I'm open to any contributions that would help this happen.

Cheers

Max

Hey Max,

Thanks for the details below.

I will note that I am basically not a developer, although I am currently taking an online class on C#/Unity. My recommendation would be that I create a simple spreadsheet with each piece of content, along with the tags that align to that content. Noting your resources meta data above, you could also provide me with that spreadsheet so that I can manually update the meta tags. I realize this is probably more effort for you, but unfortunately, my lack of dev experience limits my ability to do this sort of test on my own.

Obviously I think the resource is amazing as is, but I'm open to lending a hand further if you want to collaborate on this update, because I feel like that being able to filter by subject would make a huge impact on the value of this massive list.

Cheers.

Alright I've exported the resources data to a spreadsheet on Google Drive and shared it with you.

Cheers :+1:

Thanks Max!

I will work on categorizing a few of the resources by the end of the week and follow up with you to confirm that they are entered correctly.

Cheers.

Hey Max,

I hope this email finds you well since our original discussion this summer.

As a quick update, my previous company ramped me back up to 100% out of nowhere and in turn, I no longer had time to help with catalog the site. Thankfully, I am now officially unemployed and I would love to take on this project to improve the site, support the community and increase my understanding of VRUX.

To start, I have gone ahead and ran through all content titles on the site, and put together the following categories which (in an ideal world) the user could select multiple fields to filter the rows of content, noting that this idea is clearly blue sky and I cannot speak to the LOE involved in creating this experience.

To add to the list of filters below, I would also think that adding the release date of the article would be helpful, which, I'm happy to manually extract as I plan to review each and every article make sure the database is accurate if we move forward with these updates. See below for my initial category list which I'm happy to discuss further, as well as clarify next steps for the google drive doc https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1--onW0-GKEKq59XsqKvQuBzTQ17mqhLvrGk9yAWqCGI/edit#gid=27662339 (has this been updated since our last back and forth?)

UX of VR Category Filter Recommendations

  • User Interface Design
  • Design Process
  • Interaction Design, Gestures and Embodied Physics
  • General Physics
  • Spatial Considerations
  • User Testing, Research and Analysis
  • VR/AR Prototyping
  • Accessibility
  • 360 / Cinematic VR
  • VR Gaming
  • Social VR
  • Mobile VR
  • Oculus Specific
  • HTC Vive Specific
  • Google Hardware / Software
  • Dev Tips, Unity and Unreal
  • 3D Modeling
  • Source Code Sharing / Github
  • Augmented Reality
  • General UX / VR Topics
  • General VR Theory / Futurism

I will note that I was clearly detailed with this list, and I realize there are ways to shorten this list, but as the database is so extensive, I feel that giving the user the ability to hone down into more specific topics will elevate the quality of the overall site. (Reiterating that I do not know the level of effort involved with such an update).

I'm happy to hop on a call to discuss the above if preferred.

Thanks Max!

Hey Max,

I wanted to follow up with my note below to see if you still had any interest in collaborating on an upgrade to the UX of VR site.

I'm on standby, but, as noted below, I realize that my lack of web dev background allows me to offer up ideas that might take a lot more dev time then I would assume.

Either way, hope all is well in your neck of the woods.
