As per https://github.com/arewedistributedyet/arewedistributedyet/issues/23#issuecomment-824833125

Firefox 88 returns a permission denied error when calling navigator.registerProtocolHandler with ipfs or other dweb schemes.

The same code works in current stable release of Chrome
