[Feature request] Writing mode for nonfiction work

Open QuantumGrizzly opened this issue 3 years ago • 4 comments

Manuskript providers interesting features in the Fiction mode (Characters, Plots, World) that are awkward to use for nonfiction work (Ex: Academic writing, research papers).

Observed behavior

Using the feature of the fiction mode for nonfiction work is impractical as the naming of objects (world, plots, characters) makes it counter-intuitive to translate these object types in a nonfiction setting.

Manuskript mode nonfiction Manuskript characters nonfiction Manuskript plots nonfiction Manuskript world nonfiction Manuskript outline nonfiction Manuskript storyline nonfiction

Desired behavior

Create a nonfiction mode that either provides a better user experience for this use case. This could be achieved in one of two ways:

  1. High effort - Overhaul the UI to provide features specifically tailored to nonfiction writing
  2. Low effort - Tweak the UI to simply rename the fiction objects (world, plots, characters) to names that would map adequately to similar concepts in nonfiction writing. Here are some examples provided for informational purposes. a. World -> Subject b. Plot -> Topic c. Character -> Issue

Somewhat related as these issues request a similar feature, but for other fiction content #952 #899

I think that could be changed with standard templates, which would be the best way to work that issue out. For example, change the terms in Manuskript depending on the template you chose. What do you think on this suggestion?

Thank you for the suggestion @AlanDunaway. That would definitely work if that is possible in the templates.

I tried to search in the documentation of the website and in GitHub, I could not find instructions on how to set the terms used in the software from the template.

Do you have any resource or details on how to do that?

For now, there is no way to create templates. What I'm suggesting is to @TheJackiMonster(and the guys at the team) add a template creation feature in the future. I wish we had a template creator too. But, Manuskript is still new, there are plenty of issues to sort out.

So it would be connected to issue #421, I assume. Adding in more templates for your projects. Then you could assign a writing mode to each template or project and easily pick to use it.

But I assume adding new writing modes require multiple changes to the UI which aren't simple considering how many bugs still occur with the current UI from time to time. So I think it needs to be clear how the UI should be changed? Everyone can add some scribbles or design sheets of course. I think if we address this issue we shouldn't just rename labels and such. Because this could already be solved by adding a language in the settings tbh.
