[Feature Request] Switch to program, if it is already open

Open nevara opened this issue 7 years ago • 15 comments

Switch to the opened application, if you type in the name of the program you want to open. If it is not open, start a new instance. Like in macOS.

What a coincidence. I was searching for Open Source Wox Launcher alternatives and ended up here, and a request for the best (alfredapp) feature was opened 7 minutes ago.

I'll add my +1 here. This is the critical feature for launchers in order to be maximally valuable in day-to-day use.

I requested this in Wox Launcher a long time ago. Adding detail here in case it helps to understand the use-case details:

Wox-launcher/Wox/issues/450

Edit: Included in the link above are some of my research results on how one may be able to implement this in/for Windows

I installed ueli a few hours ago and I'm in love (coming from Alfred on Mac). See, I ended up in this thread within my first day. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Oliver & Community see to this. It would make Ueli so much more useful! THANK YOU und dankeschön :)

So this is Windows only? Because on Mac it works as expected (and I'm now too lazy to switch to Windows to test...).

sgruetter avatar Aug 30 '19 03:08 sgruetter

@sgruetter It depends on the program itself. Google Chrome for example will open up a new window. Adobe Photoshop on the other hand will focus on the window if it exists.

+1 for this feature. I am waiting for this update.

Just got Ueli installed by my IT team, hoping desperately that it replicates the functionality of Alfred on macOS.

Forgive me if this is a Windows limitation vs. Ueli, but launching a program again when I already have an instance open is utterly pointless. I launch Outlook one time a day and I switch to it a hundred times a day.

An application "launcher" thus has very limited use. An application "switcher" is what I need.

I realise I'm bitching about free software, and I apologise, but this is a total deal-breaker.

@johnnydecimal I absolutely agree. PowerToys Run is already have this feature but it lacks another cool features of Ueli. So searching for running processes is undoubtedly a deal-braker.

+1 landed here after less than 5 minutes ;-) except for that the tools looks awesome in terms of design and functionality.

BIG +1 for this Maybe this helps: https://superuser.com/questions/971563/cmd-command-in-windows-to-switch-to-an-already-open-application

I’m hoping that PowerToys Run from Microsoft will do the job — I have an install request in at work so I’ll know when I get back next week. (I’m all Mac at home, hence I know about Alfred and use it literally dozens of times a day.)

Unfortunately on PowerToys Run one needs to type "< Word" (without quotes) instead of only Word (the latter one will open a new instance, the first one switch to the running instance). Quite annoying ):

But it should be configurable I think. Like in spotlight search, I have no option to open a new instance of a terminal, and I cannot do that without flashlight, which doesnot even work on new macos

☝️ Agreed, I need the ability to open new chrome and terminal windows as part of my dev workflow. I really am trying to make OSX work more like Gnome, which gives you the option to open new instances or switch to existing instances.

Just bumping this as a desperately needed feature! And sorry for duplicating the request!

Coming back to report that there is an application (the one now built into PowerToys Run) that does this. It's named Window Walker.

I think I'm gonna run it along with ueli for the time being.
