Sorry that I didn't reply (and test) for a long time. I now uploaded a version containing your changes from the [aligned branch](https://github.com/esheldon/fitsio/tree/a91f91e51159b83b8b84da8d54b7dcd2b827f3df) (combined [here](https://salsa.debian.org/debian-astro-team/python-fitsio/blob/ff8f25ce9b1a7800566c6fa91c5d8dbac2aaf4a0/debian/patches/Fix-aligned-read.patch)), but they didn't work ([fail...
With the latest release 1.1.3, I still [get bus errors in the test](https://ci.debian.net/packages/p/python-fitsio/testing/armhf/).

There are more that 50 calls of `Observer.at_site()` in the tests (APO, Subaru, LCO,...
Byte swapping will destroy the package structure: The byte swapped file will not have the same checksums as the original; therefore a package verification will fail. Also, one cannot share...
Just as a reference for the workaround in PyRAF, https://aeon.stsci.edu/ssb/trac/pyraf/ticket/173 : > PyRAF does some semi-intelligent guessing (irafgwcs.py) to figure out what the LEN_WCS value being used (compiled into) the...
@cmccully Unfortunately, I have no idea. It may be helpful to look around in the [spacetelescope/pyraf](https://github.com/spacetelescope/pyraf) repository; this seems to have kept the commit history and look what the changeset...
