Collect location in the add a portal form

Open Stephen-Gates opened this issue 9 years ago • 2 comments

To locate a new portal on the map we need a latitude and longitude. This does not appear on the Google Sheet so Editors must determine the location from the Country, State, or City provided in the submission. The location has been manually calculated as the centroid of the geographic region.

To speed up the process we could:

  • ask submitters to provide coordinates in the submission form, or
  • use the location name to geocode the location

How do you think we should proceed?

Since we are dealing with potentially a lot of different languages, we should use the international language of numbers. We should ask people to provide the Decimal Degrees of the lat/long. Most people providing this data are most likely capable of figuring out how to get us that information.

We could even provide a link to http://www.latlong.net/ so they can find the location there, and then copy/paste the coords.
