Better than vanilla

Since the aim of Crafter seem to be, roughly

how I remember Minecraft Beta 1.2 - 1.5 plus lots of room for new fun features and creative improvements of the features of those versions

I thought it'd be nice to list quality improvements to vanilla MC in order to inspire (even more) joyful interactions in Crafter.

Found this video with some interesting improvements:

  • KleeSlabs Logical slab "management"
  • MultiMine Not only does it support continuing node breaking after pause, but more importantly it enables multiplayer cooperation on node breaking!
  • Various small features from Quark
  • The idea of mob variation from Animania. Possibly slight or not so slight color variations of the mob skins could start this idea off.

Here are some ideas I had:

I think fishing should require bait. Worms should either be found in dirt, with chances of finding it during rain increasing. It could also be found randomly in a bad apple (an apple that poisons instead of satiating). Since fishing in this way is a harder, the reward should be bigger.

I noticed that a golden pickaxe is required to mine diamonds. I'm not sure if that's a feature or a bug, but it doesn't make much sense that gold can mine diamond. Here's my idea: in order to mine diamond one requires a diamond pick (of course) or an enchanted golden pick. Enchantments should only be appliable to golden tools (because gold has magic affinity!). In that way, the player has to choose between durability of tools (diamond) or quality of tools (enchanted golden ones). The same should apply to armor. This would actually provide a reason for crafting golden tools / armor, since those are typically ignored in MC.

Inflation: in MC the more one trades with a villager, the better deals one gets. I feel that it would be more interesting that once villagers get implemented, that the market changes according to real-lifei-ish parameters. If emeralds flood the market, then emeralds wouldn't be desirable anymore (inflation). So the villagers should require other things and rejected emeralds for a while.

It would be nice to see some animals that MC doesn't have: a ridable elephant (slow, but very sturdy), ridable ostrich (super fast, but hard to tame), bats that actually do something (they could be bread and their guano could be harvested as fertilizer), etc.

Maybe thirst should be included too. It would push the player to have to build an infinite source of water from river water or from desalinated ocean water early on.

It would be nice if the player's model shivered in cold weather, along with chattering teeth sfx.

I'm not sure if the engine would allow this: when having the bow ready to shoot for a while, the mouse cursor should slightly move randomly, indicating hand fatigue.

Maybe have some RPG aspects to the game: potions have an effectiveness rate based on the amount of experience crafting them. For example: if I craft my first invisibility potion it should last me 10 seconds, but if this is my potion 25, it should last me 50 seconds.

Some food should rot after a while, unless stored with ice / snow.

@leorockway Many of your suggested features can’t be considered tweaks or iterations on Minecraft vanilla features, which is what this issue is about.

Probably best if you move them into new issues.
