If state timeout redirect user to original page

We left the state timeout at 180s but some users are still timing out. Unfortunately they're seeing the login page still when we'd prefer that they just went back to the page they originally came from. Is there a way to set a second transient with an appended ID and an action if their transient is expired to go back where they originally came from? I've tried the hooks for expired transients but am not able to get any data from it because that's the nature of transients, you destroy it by accessing it.
