did i miss installing extra packages or anything? because i also installed fonts but it didn't resolve the issue.

Hello there. actually this problem is directly related to the font. as far as I understand, there are 2 solutions.

  1. Download one of the Powerline fonts. for example Meslo LG. select this font in the terminal settings.
  2. Or use this repo to access fonts and again select from terminal settings.

I'm having the same problem, I've tried install Meslo, but the issue keeps the same.

Try to install another Powerline fonts. Maybe 'UbuntuMono' or else.

I also had the same issue. Fixed it by following canturan10 suggestion no.2:

Run the below command, and restart the terminal. sudo apt-get install fonts-powerline
