Implement optical size
With this variant the font can switch proper shape for proper size, and you can try to merge EB Garamond 12 and 08 into single font. There are two ways for this: adding size feature or intergrete OpenType font variation.
If you want to intergrete OpenType font variation, you can try to add opsz axis.
It would be very cool to have this feature! Especially since Georg already designed the 8pt masters, and intended to make versions up to 40pt, it would be excellent (and I’m guessing somewhat easier to design) to have smooth scaling from 8pt up to 40pt instead of just a stepwise optical sizing of 6pt/8pt/10pt/12pt/18pt/40pt.
Perhaps @davelab6 or someone else from @googlefonts could tell us if Google would be willing to fund such work … since OpenType variable fonts were developed on Google's initiative, it would make sense for them to have a font which shows off the features, I think? 😉

This can be tested via hb-view utility if you want to see the actual output.
The support of OT font variation are limited, some softwares such as Adobe CC, Inkscape allows to adjust the axis, while GIMP, LibreOffice doesn’t have any support for this, so I suggest add size feature and opsz axis simultaneously.
