[info request] how is generation of .cmxs done?

in the build directory there is src/ppxlib.cmxs. examining src/dune doesn't reveal how that file is mandated to be built. as far as I know the only way to get a .cmxs is by an executable stanza with (modes (native plugin))
could someone please reveal what the other way is?
