Expected Behavior
After remuxing an MKV file to MP4 using OBS’s built-in remux feature, the resulting MP4 should function identically to the MKV in editing software. Specifically, playback at 2x or 4x speed in Adobe Premiere Pro should remain smooth, just like with the original MKV.
Current Behavior
Remuxed MP4s stutter heavily during high-speed playback (2x or 4x) in Adobe Premiere Pro, even though the original MKV files play smoothly. The issue is not present when using the same remuxed MP4s in DaVinci Resolve, which handles them without stuttering. This confirms the video and audio streams themselves are not corrupt — the issue seems to stem from how the remuxed MP4 container is interpreted by Premiere.
Steps to Reproduce
-
Record in OBS using NVENC (or x264) with MKV as the container.
-
Use OBS’s “Remux Recording” function to convert MKV to MP4.
-
Import both the MKV and MP4 into Adobe Premiere Pro.
-
Play each file at 2x or 4x speed.
-
Observe: MKV plays smoothly, remuxed MP4 stutters repeatedly.
Anything else we should know?
This issue has been tested across:
-
NVENC and x264 encoders
-
MP4 and MOV containers
-
Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve
Only remuxed MP4s from OBS stutter in Premiere Pro at high speeds.
-
Original MKVs (both NVENC and x264) play fine
-
Remuxed MP4s stutter only in Premiere
-
DaVinci Resolve plays all versions without issues
This strongly suggests a container-level compatibility issue introduced during OBS remuxing that trips up Premiere, but not other editors.
the issue seems to stem from how the remuxed MP4 container is interpreted by Premiere.
While it is possible there is something wrong in how we perform a remux or how the FFmpeg libraries process the remux request, this should be reported to Adobe as a bug since it is demonstrated that other software reads the resulting files just fine. At the moment, I am inclined to close this.
@RytoEX
Thanks for the quick response!
I completely understand that this might appear to be a Premiere-specific issue, especially since DaVinci Resolve and VLC play the remuxed files without issue.
That said, I wanted to report this here because:
-
The same exact streams (from the MKV) behave differently only after being remuxed via OBS's remux tool
-
When I use FFmpeg directly to remux the MKV (e.g. with ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy output.mp4), the resulting MP4 behaves better in Premiere
-
This suggests there may be a subtle metadata or container-level difference in how the OBS remux tool configures the MP4 wrapper, which Premiere is sensitive to
Even if Premiere is being strict or fragile, it’s still the industry-standard editor for many content creators using OBS, so ensuring maximum compatibility seems worth exploring.
Happy to provide original MKV + remuxed MP4 + FFmpeg-remuxed MP4 if that would help clarify further.
Thanks again — I really appreciate the consideration before closing.
If it is in fact a bug in Premiere, it would not be the first time Premiere or Adobe products have had a bug. If you are an Adobe customer, I recommend reporting it to them to investigate.
