Add specific bronchopulmonary segments
Currently curating a dataset for HCA lung for CELLxGENE, and Gloria Pryhuber and her team have assigned their samples to the specific bronchopulmonary segment of the lung. We did not see the lung ontologized at this level of granularity and was hoping to have it added as below:
Preferred term label:
-
Right lobe:
-
upper lobe of right lung (UBERON:0002170):
- right apical bronchopulmonary segment
- right posterior bronchopulmonary segment
- right anterior bronchopulmonary segment
-
middle lobe of right lung (UBERON:0002174):
- right lateral bronchopulmonary segment
- right medial bronchopulmonary segment
-
lower lobe of right lung (UBERON:0002171):
- right superior bronchopulmonary segment
- right medial basal bronchopulmonary segment
- right anterior basal bronchopulmonary segment
- right lateral basal bronchopulmonary segment
- right posterior basal bronchopulmonary segment
-
upper lobe of right lung (UBERON:0002170):
-
Left lobe:
-
upper lobe of left lung (UBERON:0008952):
- left apical-posterior bronchopulmonary segment
- left apical bronchopulmonary segment
- left posterior bronchopulmonary segment
- left anterior bronchopulmonary segment
- left superior lingular bronchopulmonary segment
- left inferior lingular bronchopulmonary segment
- left apical-posterior bronchopulmonary segment
-
lower lobe of left lung (UBERON:0008953):
- left superior bronchopulmonary segment
- left antero-medial basal bronchopulmonary segment
- left medial basal bronchopulmonary segment
- left anterior basal bronchopulmonary segment
- left lateral basal bronchopulmonary segment
- left posterior basal bronchopulmonary segment
-
upper lobe of left lung (UBERON:0008952):
Synonyms
Definition The segment of the lung that is supplied by the tertiary bronchus of the same name. There are a number of diagrams online, but here are a few publications/resources with images:

Parent term
- "bronchopulmonary segment" (UBERON:8600017)
- Also have lobe as parent, as listed above
I agree and thank you for this addition. Further detail: The identification of bronchopulmonary segments has particular use in radiology and thoracic surgery. Each segment typically has its own pulmonary arterial branch and thus, each bronchopulmonary segment is a portion of lung supplied by its own bronchus and artery. Each segment is functionally and anatomically discrete allowing a single segment to be surgically resected without affecting its neighboring segments. Infection may also tend to be restricted to a segment by the connective tissue dividing the segments.
This issue has not seen any activity in the past 6 months; it will be closed automatically one year from now if no action is taken.
@dragon-ai-agent please add these terms. Can you also try to find an openly licensed image we can add to illustrate.
ALso investigate - can we link specific pulmonary arterial branches to these terms see
I've completed the addition of the 18 bronchopulmonary segment terms as requested.
Summary
Created PR #3623 with all 18 specific bronchopulmonary segment terms:
Right lung (10 segments):
- Upper lobe: apical, posterior, anterior (UBERON:9900001-9900003)
- Middle lobe: lateral, medial (UBERON:9900004-9900005)
- Lower lobe: superior, medial basal, anterior basal, lateral basal, posterior basal (UBERON:9900006-9900010)
Left lung (8 segments):
- Upper lobe: apical-posterior, anterior, superior lingular, inferior lingular (UBERON:9900011-9900014)
- Lower lobe: superior, antero-medial basal, lateral basal, posterior basal (UBERON:9900015-9900018)
Features
Each term includes:
- Proper logical definitions with
intersection_ofaxioms linking to parent lung lobes - Definitions based on anatomical location and bronchial supply
- Standard synonyms including segment numbers (S1-S10)
- Contributor attribution to Gloria S. Pryhuber (@gpryhuber)
- References to PMID:18271171

I found several openly licensed image resources for illustration:

Note on Pulmonary Arterial Branches
As mentioned by @gpryhuber, each segment has its own pulmonary arterial branch. I didn't add specific arterial relationships in this initial implementation, as detailed pulmonary arterial branch terms would need to be verified/added to UBERON first. This could be a future enhancement if needed.
Please review the PR and let me know if any adjustments are needed!
