Conciousness vs being awake

[wikipedia:Consciousness]" Wakfefulness: ""Behavior related to the state of being conscious and engages in a coherent cognitive and behavior responses to the external world." [NBO:SD, wikipedia:Wakefulness]"

Many animals sleep. For many of those species, most researchers would not be comfortable with use of the term 'mind'. And conciousness obviously has connotations far beyond the state of wakefulness.
