I've done some thinking on how this should work, and I've landed on a much simpler proposal than was initially thought up:

You can connect a custom domain to any existing obl.ong domain, and they will serve out the same records/pages/links/etc. For instance, I could connect reeseric.ci to reese.obl.ong, and then reeseric.ci will mirror reese.obl.ong. We could even show in the UI your connected domain.
