macOS 12.0.1 Monterey LuLu 2.4.0

Screen Shot 2021-10-31 at 13 59 15

There is no permission request under System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> General. Also, there is no profile for LuLu under System Preferences -> Network; As it used to be in previous versions. Like this: Screen Shot 2021-10-31 at 13 55 46

Has anyone else reported this issue on macOS Monterey? I think I'll wait to upgrade macOS until this issue is understood.

BartmanEH avatar Nov 03 '21 12:11 BartmanEH

@BartmanEH — yeah, I just tried installing Lulu too, after upgrading from Yosemite (where I used Little Snitch) to Monterey. Same message.

Is there a workaround for this, or should we just wait? I already enabled "Allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere" in security settings, so in case anyone's wondering, that doesn't help.

DanielSmedegaardBuus avatar Nov 03 '21 16:11 DanielSmedegaardBuus

Definitely an issue with 12.0.1 no option to open Security & Privacy

macdaddy1944 avatar Nov 15 '21 03:11 macdaddy1944

Install this version first: https://bitbucket.org/objective-see/deploy/downloads/LuLu_2.2.0.dmg

Then, uninstall it with the LuLu itself: Screen Shot 2021-11-15 at 09 28 37

Then install the last version: https://github.com/objective-see/LuLu/releases/download/v2.4.1/LuLu_2.4.1.dmg

Drjacky avatar Nov 15 '21 09:11 Drjacky

Then uninstall the last version: https://github.com/objective-see/LuLu/releases/download/v2.4.1/LuLu_2.4.1.dmg

Did you mean to say "Then install the last version[...]"? I don't understand what you're suggesting and what it accomplishes. Please explain more.

BartmanEH avatar Nov 15 '21 13:11 BartmanEH

@BartmanEH My bad, yes. Edited. First, install an old working LuLu and then uninstall it with the menu. Then, install the latest version.

The idea is from here: https://github.com/objective-see/LuLu/issues/293 Seems, uninstalling from the App menu does more than uninstalling it from the Application folder/Launchpad

Drjacky avatar Nov 15 '21 14:11 Drjacky

Well, that would get rid of all existing rules and one has to start over re-creating all the rules, right? Ugh...

BartmanEH avatar Nov 15 '21 14:11 BartmanEH

Already did this and still no joy. I get a message that I need to restart but when I do there is nothing in Security & Privacy > General.

I also have set up lower security mode due to other software namely the box beta.

@macdaddy1944 please confirm: you tried uninstalling Lulu via its menu and reinstalling fresh and you still get "Error: Activation failed"?

BartmanEH avatar Dec 02 '21 14:12 BartmanEH

It’s been so long I just don’t remember.

Do you have instructions for a manual uninstall as I have no problems using command line?

Well, referring to this post, the idea was to uninstall using Lulu menu: image

The idea being that Lulu does a different more complete job of removing itself rather overwriting Lulu with an upgrade and that by uninstalling first, a fresh install thereafter should invoke the necessary security prompts to make it work.

I can't test any of this as I'm still on Big Sur and holding off upgrading to Monterey if Lulu doesn't work on Monterey.

BartmanEH avatar Dec 02 '21 19:12 BartmanEH

Well it is not installed on my computer so I must have uninstalled it as I don’t just drag applications to the Trash or I use AppCleaner for applications that don’t have a built in uninstall function.

I can try reinstalling to see what happens but that may take a day or so as I am troubleshooting some other issues that may or may not be specific to Monterrey and Apple Silicon.

Sorry but when I install the first version there are no such menu options. I do get the ability to go into SYstem Prefs and Allow the blocked extension and when I check for updates I get that there are none.

Please ignore. I use bartender to manage my menubar and just didn’t see the menu. I did the uninstall and the downloaded and installed the new version.

When the Extension Blocked dialogue pops up clicking on Open System Preferences doesn’t work but you can just do that manually and allow the extension.

It does not request a restart which I found interesting but I do have the lower security level enabled due to other applications that still use system extensions.

Since an exiting bunch of rules are enable I am not sure when I will get a request to enable any new ones.

When the Extension Blocked dialogue pops up clicking on Open System Preferences doesn’t work but you can just do that manually and allow the extension.

Interesting. Thanks for testing this! That would imply that you have Lulu working on Monterey but just had to manually enable the extension. This circumvents the problem posed in the original post which notes:

There is no permission request under System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> General. Also, there is no profile for LuLu under System Preferences -> Network; As it used to be in previous versions. Like this: image

Does your Monterey system show the extensions? If so, the trick of uninstalling and reinstalling would appear to work.

BartmanEH avatar Dec 02 '21 20:12 BartmanEH

Yes, there is a profile and it is running.

Thank you @macdaddy1944 for confirming @Drjacky 's workaround works. For me, it's still a pain to uninstall and have to recreate all the rules I'll cultivated for some time now. I'll have to balance that work against the benefit of upgrading to Monterey, I guess!

BartmanEH avatar Dec 02 '21 20:12 BartmanEH

I am hoping that 12.1 fixes a lot of these issues. I am fighting with a disappearing mouse pointer which Apple SUpport foxed for a day and now it may be back and some third party add-on that is killing dictation which I recently started to use on my Intel Mac.

Whil I was writing this I did get a request from Lulu to enable a connection so that is a good sign.

I had the same error as @Drjacky, but @BartmanEH's solution didn't work for me. I get the same error for versions 2.1–2.4 on macOS Monterey 12.3, trying multiple different methods of uninstalling. Is it possible that endpoint management solutions like JAMF, Airwatch, or CrowdStrike could prevent LuLu from even attempting to install a system extension?

Update: It looks like the issue is not related to endpoint management, and is related to the installation of system extensions—maybe something about sysextd. Has anyone else run into similar issues so far?

I know that this is open-source software, and I'm really thankful to @objective-see for putting this out at all, even though I can't use it right now.
