Design pattern for protocol terms

We are interested in adding some protocol terms (based on existing OBI assay terms):

• specimen portioning protocol
• organism identification protocol
• genotyping protocol
• insecticide resistance assay protocol
• pathogen detection protocol
• blood meal host identification protocol

OBI currently only has a few protocol terms, and only one has a defining axiom. If we introduce more, it makes sense to do so following a design pattern. Should such a pattern dictate that protocol terms be given defining axioms, or should the planned process terms have defining axioms in terms of the associated protocol? (Also, if we give defining axioms to protocol terms, should they be defined in terms of an objective or a process?)
