topic for meeting discussion - handling of 'data format specification'

Hello all, For our CFDE and other projects, we have a need for terms to describe file format types. We initially wanted to use EDAM for this purpose since they already have a lot of good terms for this. However, there are some new terms that we need and although EDAM developers replied to our initial requests (made two years ago), our terms have not been incorporated and EDAM has not made a release in two years. Therefore, we are exploring other sources for such terms. We have looked at OBI, EFO, and SWO. We notice that all three ontologies import the IAO term 'data format specification'. However, there are inconsistencies in it's use across and within these ontologies. In fact it doesn't appear that any of the three are exactly using the term as defined (or at least as we understand the definition). We'd like to understand OBI's current use of this term with regard to file formats - in particular, the addition to this term of Instances instead of Subclasses as well as the presence of the single subclass child 'BCL format'. We'd also like to understand how 'datum' is defined in OBI and whether 'datum label' might be an appropriate home for file formats. Thanks, Michelle and Suvvi @nsuvarnaiari

Discussion 5/13/24 If EDAM isn't active, SWO would be the natural place, but they don't seem to be responsive either. General thought is that OBI is not the right home - we don't want OBI to be the place where things go when they don't have a proper home.

Mark has NMDC list Info on wikipedia EDAM - no release in 4 years

OBI could have a class and then refer to an outside party.

All will think about this and we can revisit later.
