Request: consider broadening definition of OBI:device

Open jonathanbona opened this issue 4 years ago • 3 comments

A material entity that is designed to perform a function in a scientific investigation, but is not a reagent. http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/OBI_0000968

Under this definition, medical devices do not seem to count as OBI:devices. Medical devices may be out of scope for OBI, but it would be nice to be able to use OBI:device as a parent term.

There are also subclasses of OBI:device, like 'voltage amplifier', 'power supply', 'computer', 'needle' which have instances not designed to perform a function in a scientific investigation.

remove "scientific investigation" and "is not a reagent" parts in the definition to match needs. add "is manufactured by" as an axiom (after identifying which axioms are currently present for this term)

Discussed 2020-10-05. Determining whether to remove disjoint axiom. Agreement with proposed definition changes. Will discuss next call.

revised definition for reagent role: A role of a processed material (the reagent) that is realized as part of a planned process where the reagent is combined with other material entities to facilitate a chemical reaction

revised definition for device: A processed material that is created to have a function and that is not a reagent

Examples: Beads coated with tags? → reagent Microarray coated with probes? → device Antibodies? → reagent PBS buffer? → reagent Luciferase? ---> reagent Single use syringe → device
