Anyone think it would be cool to see someone fork this repo and make it awesome again?

I think it would be nice that people develop tools to communicate with peer to peer software. If it's not with this one, I hope it will be another.
I've thought of an e-mail based "instant" messaging.
Everyone possesses one or many e-mails, so it's pretty "open".
Like an e-mail client, but that would looke like MSN or whatever, and be easy to use.
Well you can use XMPP/Jabber for that. It is distributed (not decentralized) like e-mail is. It is my preferred method of communication.
are there any notes as to why the project was closed? was it a simple lack of interest, or a technical barrier? I've been wondering what the challenges are to running a DHT or P2P net over the data plans of common cell carriers.
