Can't get italic, bold to work using slide2

Using latest master, I can't get Sphinx formatting like *cursive* or **bold** to work - it just has no effect on the rendered slides, the respective text gets rendered in normal font. If I render, e.g., to latexpdf this works as expected. What is wrong here?

Also, in nested lists, a level-2 item with children gets bolded, but level-2 items without children don't, very curious. I don't know how to fix this.
