NVDA announces 'space' at the end of each separate mathematical text

Open nvaccessAuto opened this issue 10 years ago • 10 comments

Reported by bhavyashah on 2015-05-23 10:24 I am using NVDA's Math try build, Math Player 4 Beta 2 and Microsoft Office Word 2007. Open a Word document containing mathematical text and just right arrow to it. Observe that after reading the actual mathematical text, NVDA will say 'space' for no apparent reason. I am assuming that the announcement of 'space' at the end of each piece of mathematical text is unintentional and a bug, although, its pretty trivial.

Comment 1 by jteh on 2015-05-24 23:10 This is also true for other special items that occupy a single character such as separators, graphics, etc. We probably need to use some special character and ensure NVDA doesn't speak it for these.

@jcsteh @feerrenrut I would suggest labelling this as a P2 or a P3 depending on the implementation cost because the reported issue has a wide-ranging impact from Math to other special characters. Additionally, this is more of a bug that needs to be fixed rather than a new feature. Thoughts?

@bhavyashah are you still able to reproduce it in newer versions of MS Word with NVDA 2018.4.1 and newest Math player?

This issue is reproducible with NVDA 2023.2 and the MathCAT add-on for an HTML document containing Math ML viewed in Microsoft Edge version 116.0.1938.81. CC @nsoiffer P.S. For what it's worth, my views have evolved on the priority and I agree with a P4 for NVDA. This issue is limited to character and word navigation. It is also limited to special characters and Math, which most NVDA users don't interact with regularly. Also, the verbosity is trailing - the "space" is spoken after the Math content - making it easier to ignore than if it were leading. Still fairly annoying when I'm really trying to process some complex Math (esp. when split across Math blocks) but I recognize that's a niche use case.

@bhavyashah is this still reproducible with NVDA 2025.1.2 rC and last version of Mathcat in Edge 137 or newer?

Is this also reproducible in last 64bit alpha after integration of Mathcat?Von meinem iPhone gesendetAm 02.12.2025 um 11:46 schrieb bhavyashah @.***>:bhavyashah left a comment (nvaccess/nvda#5105) The issue is reproducible with NVDA 2025.3 and Google Chrome version 142.0.7444.176. Please reopen.

As indicated by @jcsteh, this isn't coming from the Math plugins (even when they are built in), but happens at the NVDA level and affects things besides math.

For math, it only affects MathType equations in Word (it is an "object"), not math written with the Word editor. With the Word editor, moving right moves you into the editor and that takes over speech. Moving out does not say space.
