PR: Inclusive and Accessible Pronoun Pin Updates

Fixes: #44

🛠️ Changes Made

🎨 Neutral Color Scheme

  • Replaced the previous color scheme with truly neutral options:
    • Teal – he/him
    • Orange – she/her
    • Gray – they/them
    • White – ask/other pronouns
  • Added explicit guidance to avoid traditional gendered colors (e.g., red/pink for women, blue for men)

♿ Enhanced Accessibility for Colorblind Users

  • Introduced multiple methods of visual differentiation:
    • Geometric shapes: circle, square, triangle, diamond
    • Patterns: stripes, dots, solid backgrounds
    • Border styles: thick, thin, dashed
    • Text positioning: varied locations for label clarity
  • Included high-contrast color requirements
  • Recommended testing with colorblind simulation tools

🗣️ Strengthened "Ask" Option

  • Added a dedicated section emphasizing the importance of the "Ask" option
  • Explained why this option is crucial for:
    • People who use different pronouns in different contexts
    • Individuals who are questioning or exploring gender identity

🏷️ Expanded Alternative Options

  • Added guidance on using custom ribbons for neo-pronouns (e.g., Zi/Zir, Xe/Xem)
  • Provided options for "Fill in your own" ribbons using fabric markers
  • Suggested the use of blank ribbons for maximum flexibility and inclusion

📂 Files Changed

  • DISCOVER/11_inclusive_practices_during_checkin.md – Main content update
  • DISCOVER/13_inclusive-checklist.md – Checklist updated
  • DISCOVER/02_minimal_measures.md – Summary section updated

🌍 Impact

These changes aim to make pronoun pins more inclusive and accessible by:

  • Avoiding color associations that may be unintentionally gendered
  • Ensuring usability for attendees with color vision differences
  • Providing flexible options for diverse gender identities and pronoun usage
  • Retaining the usefulness of visual identifiers for event staff and attendees

✅ Testing & Validation

  • All existing functionality remains intact
  • Neutral color scheme and accessibility features were designed following established accessibility guidelines
  • Additional testing recommended with tools simulating colorblindness (e.g., Coblis, Color Oracle)
