Speed issues using Labview

I'm implementing a chatserver using ENC28J60 and Labview. The problem is I have to wait half a second between read/write commands, or else the process times out. Is this to be expected? In a previous project I used the 5100 Ethernet Shield with the standard package and did not experience any problems. What can I do to improve speed? Thanks!
