README about disk space and read-write speed

Open rb0022 opened this issue 2 months ago • 4 comments

README update to:

  • estimate expected total capacity required during runtime (~20GiB)
  • suggest an end user could temporarily disable their anti-virus scan (e.g. Windows Defender) to increase the read-write speed during DISM related activities (mount/umount/export)

I would agree to point 1... advising about the free space needed to perform the operations. Even better would be to add that into the script so that it checks available disk space, and if not enough is available, perhaps ask user "OK to run DiskCleanup and try to free up space?" then if "Y" run "START /wait CLEANMGR /verylowdisk /autoclean" and re-check for ~20Gb free disk space. If not enough disk space is available after that (ELSE) stop operations and notify the user they need to free up space on the drive the script is run from before continuing.

On point 2, I would disagree, but only because of how people react to "disable your antivirus during the process" requests... immediate shade and questioning would come into play. Also, that would be more of a preference than a requirement, so users that are entrenched in performance would probably assume this and do it anyway.

Hello ! I totally agree with @TheBeardofKnowledge. The point 1 is a good improvement. I think we should add it to the script.

For the second point, a lot of people actually don't trust modified OS. I've seen lot of users suggested others to not use them, tiny11 included. Even with the docs, stars, the open source, etc... people are still reluctance. So adding something that say "Please feel more vulnerable" is really not a good idea.

On 1, definitely would not go beyond the scope of the script. Print a warning message about disk space, and let the end-user figure it out - no need to offer an automated command that runs a cleanup and the issues is full of complaints about error messages for cleanup.

On 2, I can see the point about that. Although anyone reading the PowerShell code could see the modded OS is all relatively standard Windows sysadmin wizardry, but the point raised is that novices would not know and would run scared at the mention of anti-virus in any context. Perhaps a simple line in the README such as....

Please note, tiny11builder performs a significant amount of disk read/write and will take longer if the system is in heavy use by other applications that are using the disk at the same time.

I'm mitigate, there some things i'm for and against, so, I think that for this case, I will align with the final choice made.

But for sure we can improve the readme. It can be clearer
