[Feature Request] RetroAchievements Support

Open TheFetishMachine opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

RetroAchievements is a website (and community) that lets developers make achievement sets for various platforms (not just consoles), by hooking into various emulators' memory. The Nspire has a good amount of homebrew games so RA support might be interesting to pursue.

Here are some resources about adding RA integration:

Interesting idea, but IMO a bit odd. First, the vast majority of games for the Nspire platform are emulated, it would be required to add support in the game emulators as well and somehow pass that through. That's unlikely to be used in practice though as the native emulators are vastly superior to running Nspire ports of them in FB.

For Nspire-native games it makes more sense, but are those popular enough to actually get played in Firebird and not just on calcs and then also get retro achievements assigned and on top of that also played by those interested in retro achievements?

What I meant originally was games made specifically for the Nspire platform, as opposed to emulators. As you said, there's no use in supporting those, considering native PC emulators for those platforms are already supported.

As for whether Nspire games would be popular enough, I don't think that is too much of a problem. There's many platforms on RA that not many people knew about before encountering them for the first time on RA itself. Infact, I feel that RetroAchievements support would actually highlight these games among the RA community and give them some "publicity" of sorts as has happened before with, for example, a few indie/homebrew focused platforms (see Arduboy or WASM-4), so I think it could happen with the Nspire as well.

I thought it was worth a shot at the very least. Of course, only if you'd be interested to pursue this avenue further :) If you feel like it, I can post an invite to the RA server so you could get in contact with the devs there directly; but no pressure.
