Installing in another partition
Got my hands on an 8.1 machine and LICK was perfect for installing Puppy in it. Did not check if it is available or even possible but would be nice to be able to install the files in another partition with a linux fs. Either during installation (if the partition is rw from windows) or manually (and auto-edit the config file). An example page with the config options would be also nice in case someone wants to exploit them. Thanks again for this very handy utility.
Hi,
During installation, you can change the destination drive to any mounted drive - essentially, any FAT or NTFS drive. If one can mount an ext2/3/4 drive (it looks like there may be a few online), you can install there (frugally), and I believe everything would just work.
I think automating or helping the user partition their drive is outside of the scope of the project right now - it would simply add too much complexity. I feel that if someone knew what "partition" meant, they would rather use a live cd to partition then a GUI I could make.
When I get some time, I will put up some documentation on config file locations, types and examples. Thank you for the suggestion!
Although you can indeed mount a linux fs in windows, you can not mount it at the bootloader stage before the kernel is loaded. My "compromise" is to keep initrd.gz and vmlinuz in C:\ and define at the kernel command line the location of the puppy SFSs
I believe that can be done currently by just moving the SFS file and changing "psubdir" in the grub config file accordingly. I'll be sure to test that, and include an example like that when I write the documentation (which might not be for a while still).
