Application does not open on Windows 10

Open sanket038 opened this issue 2 years ago • 7 comments

System Info

I have downloaded the setup from "https://gpt4all.io/installers/gpt4all-installer-win64.exe" and installed it as requested. However, after running the GPT4ALL from start menu, nothing happens. It does not open the UI as specified. Also, when I open the task manager, I could see "chat.exe" there. I then tried to restart my system and open the application again however, it does not open.

Alternately, while serching for solution in the existing issues, I found that there is another version as well called [gpt4all-installer-win64-v2.5.3-pre1-relwithdebinfo-console.exe] hosted at "https://github.com/nomic-ai/gpt4all/releases/download/v2.5.2/gpt4all-installer-win64-v2.5.3-pre1-relwithdebinfo-console.exe"

When installed this version, it works and I am able to run the UI and chat normally after downloading the models. However, it has issues with my documents as it does not ingest properly and gives rubbish responses. I can see the ingestion completed status as shown in UI but it still gives generic response.

Information

  • [X] The official example notebooks/scripts
  • [ ] My own modified scripts

Reproduction

On win 10, download the exe from above link and install. Try to open the application from start menu as well as from the bin path as chat.exe

Expected behavior

The app should open with the latest version, also, it should ingest the files and provide responses from the ingested files.

Same on Windows 11. There is chat.exe process but no window showing up.

Multiple users seem to have this problem on Windows of starting chat.exe after installing GPT4All.

One user reported (unfortunately cannot find the source anymore) that uninstalling and deleting/reseting nomic.ai configuration files that continued to live in the subdirectories of C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\ solved the issue and made it possible to open chat.exe, after they had reinstalled GPT4All.

I am sure this symptomp/behaviour could be triggered by various things that go wrong (e.g. broken harddrive etc.), but deleting the config files might be worth a try for any user experiencing similar symptoms.

I tried gpt4all long time ago, while it was just a console tool. But it didn't have installer as fas as I remember. Did it create any configs back then, that could affect showing gui window now?

I face the same issue on my Windows 10 Laptop with a 4800H CPU.

@ThiloteE

I have tried to simulate the instructions you gave but they did not work. As verified, the only path where information about gtp4all is saved or created when installed (Apart from the main program folder) is in C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\cache in a folder named "qt-installer-framework ".

  1. Uninstall gpt4all
  2. Delete the cache files from the path indicated above.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. I reinstalled. It didn't work.

@ThiloteE I did a second test using the installer https://github.com/nomic-ai/gpt4all/releases/download/v2.5.2/gpt4all-installer-win64-v2.5.3-pre1-relwithdebinfo-console.exe

The graphical interface loads correctly and allows the installation of the different models, however, when trying to use it, a dialog box appears demanding or indicating that there is an update or more recent version available, thus preventing the use of the application.

Observation: Here the folder C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\nomic.ai appears - This is only created when the AI models are downloaded to use in the GPT4All.exe app

Well, don't update then. Or do update? The current version is 2.5.4.

ThiloteE avatar Jan 03 '24 03:01 ThiloteE

@ThiloteE Not updating is an option. In any case, I share the log generated by the installation using the test .exe (Not the final version)

QML debugging is enabled. Only use this in a safe environment.

Anyway, it is not possible to use GPT4All in Window. If you have any additional information that could help, I would appreciate it.

Greetings.

There are multiple recorded separate reasons why this can happen:

  • https://github.com/nomic-ai/gpt4all/issues/1477

chat.exe used to work but recently I have not been getting a GUI. The process is still running in task manager on low CPU usage. No idea what has changed.

Edit This version works for some reason.

I solved same problem problem / issue on my Windows 11 machine:

hey .. just an update for Windows users:

The reason ... why on windows chat.exe is opening in the task manager only but not opening the GUI seems to be an interference with AVG Antivirus software. After uninstalling it gpt4all version 2.8 pre opened with CUDA and everything!!

I made a discord post in the Gpt4all channel here: https://discord.com/channels/1076964370942267462/1090651132390543400/1242561840056111114

give it a try ... uninstall antivirus ... especially if you have AVG Antivirus ... run chat.exe again ... reinstall antivirus

Likely fixed by https://github.com/nomic-ai/gpt4all/pull/2162, included in GPT4All v2.7.4. Commenters other than neural-oracle should try the latest GPT4All release and see if your issue is fixed.
