chat: network error: could not retrieve models from gpt4all

Open Aravind01001 opened this issue 9 months ago • 8 comments

Issue with current documentation:

I am unable to download any models using the gpt4all software. It's saying network error: could not retrieve models from gpt4all even when I am having really no network problems. I tried downloading it manually from gpt4all.io/models but the pages are all dead and not responding. I tried downloading from other third party websites also but it's not at all working. PLease contact as soon as possible.

Idea or request for content:

No response

If you are unable to reach http://gpt4all.io/models/models2.json, I don't think there's anything we can do. That URL works fine for me.

Thats not it. I can reach that file just fine and still always get error downloading them. Some start and just magically stops with red error.

Can I download the files manually from that .json file and use it in the program by coping it to the model directory?

Edit: No need, yes you can download and copy to model directory but you have to download one of the model when first launch in software. Unfortunately even on a strong pc, this software take forever to generate. To slow for real use

What is the error you get if you paste that URL into a browser? 401, 403, 404, 500, SSL error, etc.? And are you using any kind of VPN or proxy to access the internet?

The link cebtenzzre provided is the link I use to download it. If you cant even access the link, try a different browser, use a download manager (this is what I use), use a vpn and try to download, check your firewall settings, check antivirus settings, check proxy settings if using. Maybe even try using a different device (tablet or mobile just to see if you can even access the file and rule out isp problems or if the device you currently using is at fault) All these can affect your download.

Please improve the display of the error message:

Download did not work for me from within the GUI, not on Windows and not on Ubuntu.

Manually downloading the file, moving it in the model/download folder and restarting gpt4all worked for me. If you do not know the download directory have a look at the settings:

(Also consider to increase the number of threads.)

As far as I can tell, there is no issue with GPT4All here. Closing.
