Mastodon instances can run on a domain different from a user-handle one (i.e. server on mastodon.example.com, user handles on @example.com)

Users of those instances might try logging in via domain in their handles. Right now, Pinafore would get 404 in this case. Checking domain's /.well-known/webfinger and/or /.well-known/host-meta would help in that case

I'm sorry, but let me make sure I understand what the request is.

Are you saying that someone might have the handle @[email protected], which actually "redirects" to @[email protected], and the idea is that people should be able to enter foo.com instead of social.foo.com into the Pinfaore "Enter instance name" field?
