Portrait & Landscape image size bug with changed CSS

Hi there, sorry I could not make a fiddle with images, somehow that would not work to load images from placehold.it....

Basically I changed the CSS to have a 1px border/padding like so:

/* dimensions: cut off images */
overflow: auto;
padding: 1px 1px 0;
border-bottom: 1px solid transparent;

That works fine with landscape images, but with any portrait in the same gallery it looks like this. Seems like a bug to me. It looks like there is exactly those 48px of white space on the right....
