Next 10 years for Blog posts
I don't know where to put a suggestion so I apologise in advance and feel free to move this issue. The NodeJS blog is a bit messy, and I wanted to raise it and share the scenario some of us go through. I mentioned some of this in the survey also.
The official blog is still linked to https://nodejs.org/en/blog/ but as you can see this isn't really a blog, this is a list of release notes. It's titled "News" but to be honest I wouldn't even call it that, it's just a changelog. There are useful blog posts intermixed with the changelog such as https://nodejs.org/en/blog/vulnerability/jan-2018-spectre-meltdown/.
So to get around this I understand there is a new blog for Node on Medium https://nodejs.medium.com/ (I'm assuming this is now the official one). The issue is it took me a long time to find this, nothing links to it. Googling "Node[js] Blog" brings me here https://nodejs.org/en/blog/ and the medium result is near the bottom of the page.
Possible approach:
- The Blog and the changelog need to be separated, rename News to Changelog and continue doing what you do there.
- Any Blog link on the website should point to medium, this should help bring that higher when users are searching for the node blog.
- Add the Blog link as a top level navigation item to the website https://nodejs.org/en/ so its easier to find
- Remove "News" so now there's "Changelog" and "Blog"
Thanks for raising the issue. I think it would best be discussed in nodejs/admin so I'll move it there. I'm thinking nodejs/admin versus nodejs/nodejs.org since I think we need to agree " https://nodejs.medium.com/ " is now the official one,
I'll start out with I'm not sure we want to move the existing content that goes under "news" to medium. I know there are concerns about it not always being freely available. I do agree though that making it easier to find/get to the medium blog post makes sense.
@mhdawson how does the decision get made that Medium/Website is the official home of the NodeJS blog?
@jasonwilliams I'm not sure, the use of both Medium and the Website blog section has been the ways thing have been for a number of years. I wonder if the @nodejs/social team would have some input.
