org-remark-line-heading-title-max-length is not applied
Using emacs -Q 29.4 and only org-remark 1.2.2. Open any Info mode page (happens everywhere not only here). Highlight a region greater than org-remark-line-heading-title-max-length and run org-remark-mark. Inspect the created heading in marginalia.org and see that it is not truncated.
Yes, this is as designed at the moment. org-remark-line-heading-title-max-length is applied only to line-highlights (eg org-remark-mark-line). I just realized this feature is not really visible in README (but mentioned in the manual). I've written about it in an article on my blog, but I don't seem to have added a link to it in README... Something to improve soon. Thanks for reporting.
I will think about if I should add a feature to apply the title max length to other parts -- I guess that's what you expect, isn't it?
Just to be sure -- the blog article mentions version 1.3 -- the feature should be already available in the last available version on ELAP-dev (org-remark-1.2.2.0.20241102.192817.. v1.3 will be the next stable version... The fact you see org-remark-line-heading-title-max-length means you should have the line-highlights feature
I think I came across it from the manual or just reading source code. My use case is highlighting large regions of text to re-read later for documents that will never change (nov.el, wallabag.el**). This creates huge metadata. Huge string as an org heading then duplicated again in :remark-original-text-text:. In my use case the latter is still somewhat useful as it is machine searchable but to have it duplicated in the heading is redundant.
I was not aware of org-remark-mark-line but this looks like it addresses some of these problems. I had come up with a system which was to reserve certain pens with special meaning. For example if the first word of a paragraph is highlighted in red, this signifies the entire paragraph is relevant. Otherwise the org headings are unreadable walls of text.
Just a thought, using org-transclusion as inspiration. What if say I want to highlight half a page, instead of having a visually busy overlay. I will just have a line in the fringe.
**this runs on shr like nov and eww.
I would like to keep it as an open issue for me to revisit. Thank you.
This creates huge metadata. Huge string as an org heading
I sometimes feel the same way for some of my large "range-highlights". I normally look at the notes buffer, one at a time in a side-window (see image), so the "huge metadata" does not annoy me very often. When it does, I simply change the heading manually -- it is another step you might like to automate and avoid, but this is what we have at the moment.
It is good to know that org-remark works with wallabag.el -- hadn't heard about it until your issue. Thanks!
