At the moment I build a optional part to add/manage tags to images. The next week I got some time to finish this issue and fix the next open issue.

Has this ever been added to the module? I couldn't find a way to activate it.

Unfortunately I'm too busy and I still not work on it yet. Also I don't know when I can start with it.

Ok, no problem :) There is a fork that implements something like that, so maybe that's worth a deeper look.
