Is there a way to have animation only on the front and not the reverse?

Multiple things simultaneously flipping looks a bit hectic.

A nicer solution would be to just snap the first card back to initial state (without animating back to initial state) when a user hovers a new card. Then their attention will be drawn to the card they hovered rather than the previous card
