this is more of an issue with statefulsets and pvcs than with vistio. Upgrading your kubernetes version to >=1.9 might help fix this issue

Sorry this hasnt been updated since pre 1.0 release, In newer Istio versions mixer no longer exists so metrics are gathered differently now.
i have gotten this to work with istio 1.9 but i would suggest you look at this grafana integration as it is more active https://grafana.com/grafana/plugins/novatec-sdg-panel/
istio-csr has this problem today and mounts the certificates manually to get around it https://raw.githubusercontent.com/cert-manager/website/master/content/docs/tutorials/istio-csr/example/istio-config-getting-started.yaml
I think we are missing the point of this feature and the end user it serves. 95% of Istio users just want to enable Service A to talk to Service...
