Network interfaces do not come up during reboot after installing Wireshark on Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi,

I have VMs in Azure running windows server 2012 R2 and having 2 network interfaces, I tried to install wireshark:

  1. I have installed latest Wireshark (3.4.5 64-bit) on the VM
  2. Rebooted the VM
  3. After reboot VM became unreachable
  4. logging in to the VM via serial console shows ipconfig /all has only one loopback interface
  5. uninstalled wireshark and npcap from commandline and rebooted the VM, network interfaces came up.

This is an older problem happened on older versions also. Last good known wireshark version is 2.6.4.

Do you have any idea what is blocking network interfaces? What logs/configs should I check?

Hi, I would suggest you to see, if https://github.com/nmap/npcap/issues/259#issuecomment-841836349 helps.

Hi, I would suggest you to see, if #259 (comment) helps.

I.e., try installing the latest version of Npcap - currently 1.31 - from the Npcap Web site.

I tried it, installed Npcap 1.31 only (without WS) rebooted the VM and still doesn't work. Additionally let me correct myself: there are no interfaces at all when I list ipconfig /all:

C:\Windows\system32>ipconfig /all

Windows IP Configuration

   Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : *******web3
   Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : dmz.***.com
   Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
   IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
   WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
   DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : dmz.***.com
                                       ***.com

C:\Windows\system32>
