Wrong url causes the plug in to crash the whole web application

I made a mistake in my application which passes a wrong url to the plugin. Example: instead of https://yahoo.com, the url being passed is https://yahoo.com"> .

I already fixed my application, unfortunately there are already lots of entries in my database.

It was my fault of passing the wrong url, but it doesn't make sense that the plugin crashes the whole application just because it receives a wrong data. There should be a fail safe.
