Feature request: Support for PET-data

Open ChristianNSchmitz opened this issue 4 years ago • 1 comments

Dear nipy-team,

Next to the ASL-support would like to ask you if you are planning support of heudiconv for PET (newly published on BIDS v1.5.0 on 2021-02-23)?

Best wishes and thanks! Christian

Christian - Most of the BIDS MRI tags have a direct correspondence with existing DICOM tags, so they can be automatically extracted from the DICOM datasets by dcm2niix (and therefore heudiconv). On the other hand, BIDS BEP009 defines a lot of PET-specific BIDS tags, but many do not seem to have corresponding DICOM Positron Emission Tomography Isotope Module Attributes. Likewise, most do not have counterparts in ECAT7 files. We do not have PET scanners at my institute, and therefore my ability to support this modality has been extremely limited. You can contribute by either making a pull request to dcm2niix with source code that supports these features, or sharing DICOMs that provide this meta data (e.g. send me a link to datasets via DropBox). A limitation of BEP009 is they provide NIfTI/BIDS exemplars of correct solutions, but not the DICOM/ECAT files that they were generated from. I might be wrong, but I suspect many of the desired fields simply do not exist in DICOM/PET, and therefore each user will need to insert the desired tags. You may also want to work with your manufacturer research collaboration manager to have this meta data included in future software releases.

By the way, here is a listing of the PET fields currently extracted by dcm2niix, though I am not sure which vendors support which DICOM tags.
