Upgrade process? Release process?

The setup instructions just say to download the latest release and run the executable.

How do I go about upgrading to a more recent version?

How do a build a new release?

How do I upgrade from one release to another? Is this supported? Does this require database migrations? Is there a way to migrate the database?

So I tried building latest master and copying the executable and public directories across, but I now get "Couldn't retrieve threads." message so I'm guessing there's more involved in this process.
