SVG Text in Chrome

I am having this very strange issue where the SVG text has 0w and 0h in chrome for my particular web application. The JS fiddle example works fine for me, as does my current code in MS Edge and Safari. I can see the text in the actual html code, and have compared the CSS between my application and the sample, they are completely identical.
